Victoriana Nursery Gardens

Victoriana Nursery in Kent have put together an absolutely fabulous planting scheme for the show garden from red and purple Carrots to orange Cauliflower, traffic light Gooseberries and Sweetcorn Strawberry Popcorn (pictured below).

Their experience is second to none and we cant wait to see what they have grown for the show garden, it is assured to be spectacular.

Sweetcorn Strawberry PopcornSome people have green fingers, fewer have green in their blood, fewer still have green genes! For two generations, Victoriana Nursery Gardens have been supplying superb plants to the Nation’s gardeners, with that extra touch – passion.

Pumpkin Jack be LittleThe driving force behind the nursery is the Shirley family; two generations of them who, from children Molly and Milly (5 and 3 yrs) Stephen and his wife Serena and father Jeremy and his wife Joan, are all passionate about gardens, and the very best plants to put in them.

It is no accident that the youngest team member is 3 years old. The nursery has long been in the forefront of encouraging young hands into their garden. The Victoriana motto is “if they grew it, they’ll eat it” reinforced by their commitment to schools and young people. Victoriana Nursery Gardens are involved in a number of initiatives with schools, running gardening clubs, providing generous discounts to schools and encouraging schools nationwide with video lessons for the classroom, innovative schemes of work as well as providing special tools for small hands.

Pumpkin Jack be LittleEach year a competition for schools is widely subscribed, but it’s not just about children doing just another lesson. It’s about fun, about learning and about simply joining in. Last year over a thousand pumpkins were judged from many schools where the children kept growing diaries as well as completely enjoying getting their hands dirty (or should that be green?)

What’s different about Victoriana Nursery Gardens?
Apart from superb and interesting plants such as Strawberry Popcorn or Shirley’s Giant Exhibition Peas (old fashioned peas that grow so tall you’d think they were magic) there is sheer enthusiasm. It is no mistake that when you buy their plants, they arrive packed so carefully that even if they have travelled hundreds of miles, they’re still perfect on arrival. They just love what they are doing, and in the gardening world that means green fingers, toes and whatever else you care to mention.

Down to work in the woods at Victoriana Nursery. All the family are involved with the setting out of the show garden, even the dog. This is primarily to see in real life how many pots of fruit and vegetables will be needed for the areas. Above is a brilliant picture taken at the nursery when Jeremy age 74 works with Milly age 3 to plant the seeds for the vegetables that are going to the show, so its safe to say that the potential RHS Gold medal winning vegetables are grown by a three year old! Well done Milly! 4 feet tall and growing! These are the fruit canes for the outside of the show garden, all under glass and ready to be shown in front of 150,000 visitors to the show in June.

Taken Easter weekend the show how things are moving on and as they are being grown on an angle away from each other you can see how they will make a really good incredible edible fence for the perimeter of the garden.
